The
Doula Association of Central Oklahoma (DACO) is an association of doulas
in the central area of the state of Oklahoma. The purpose of our association
is to improve the quality of maternity care and health of mothers and
newborn babies by providing physical, emotional, and informational support
for women during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum, and by furthering the
profession of Labor Support. We work to actively and effectively increase
the number of trained doulas and increase communication for doulas. Our
goal is to enhance the role of the doula in families, communities, and
health care systems in Oklahoma.
DACO
Inc. was formed in 1998 in response to the growing need for labor support
in central Oklahoma. We are incorporated and registered as a non-profit
organization since June 2004. DACO Inc. members are a diverse group of
Doulas and supporters, most of whom have completed training with DONA
International, the premier Doula training Organization in North America.
There
are currently two kinds of doulas in our membership, Birth Doulas and
Postpartum Doulas. Some doulas will provide one service, while other doulas
offer both services.
A
BIRTH DOULA...
- Recognizes
birth as a key life experience that the mother will remember all her
life.
- Provides
emotional support, physical comfort measures, an objective viewpoint,
and assistance to the woman in getting the information she needs to
make a good decision.
- Stays
by the side of the laboring woman throughout the entire labor.
- Assists
the partner to participate at their own comfort level in ways that help
the laboring woman.
- Facilitates
communication between the laboring woman, her partner, and clinical
care providers.
- Perceives
her role as one who nurtures and protects the woman's memory of her
birth experience.
A
POSTPARTUM DOULA...
- Provides
mother and newborn care, breast feeding support, childbirth recovery,
cooking, child care, errands, and light cleaning- for the family.
- Is
a caregiver of non-medical support. Healthcare professionals such as
doctors, midwives, nurses and others are responsible for the health
and well being of mother and baby. The non-medical support of the doula
meets the physical , emotional and social needs of the family (DONA
International - Standards of Practice).
- Helps
new parents understand the social, emotional, and physical needs and
behavior of their newborn, resulting in decreased frustration, anxiety
and exhaustion in the early weeks.
- Provides
a high level of non-judgmental support and coping strategies for the
mother which can help to reduce the incidence of Postpartum Depression.
